IS MERCHANT NAVY IS GOOD OPTION TO JOIN?
Whether it’s
a good profession or not, it really depends upon a lot of factors. People are
completely ignorant about what merchant navy is and how does it work. Even the
students of marine colleges don’t have sufficient information about the
profession, leave alone the outsiders. I always had tough time making people
understand about my work. In almost 90 percent of the cases, people confuse
between Indian navy and merchant navy.
Merchant
navy is a rudimentary term, but actually it’s the company under which you are
working with plays a vital role in your job satisfaction. The quality of life
and recreation onboard, the condition of ships and your income varies from
companies to companies.
However, there are some challenges
which every seafarer will have to face regardless of the company and without
any choice.
· The most significant one is the
separation from your family for a very long time. If the loneliness drives you
crazy and you can’t afford to be away from your family for a very long time,
then sorry, you should not think about joining this profession.
· If you think that the human body is
designed to work during day and sleep at night , then i am sorry again, you
can’t work here. You will be so consumed
in your work that sometimes you won’t realize how the week passed, forget about
day and night. Some of the days your schedule will be so messed up that you
will be working at night and trying to sleep during the day. However,
international laws will make sure that you get sufficient rest in the 24 hour
period, but there is no provision for not working at night.
· If you are a soft soul and the very
thought of extreme hot and extreme cold conditions give you the worst
nightmares, then you should be staying away from this profession. Once the
temperature in the engine room was so high that we were working for 15 mins and
then taking a break to cool ourselves down.
· If examination, books and interviews
are something that you want to stay away from, then i should mention that these
are the part and parcel of the marine profession. Competency exams for
promotion aren’t piece of cake. You will really have to toil very hard to get
through them.
There are numerous advantages in working in merchant
navy

I don’t
think there is any other profession which makes you so responsible in such a
short duration. For me it’s not just a profession but an opportunity to grow
and experience something exceptional.
Merchant
Navy, even the word is enough to bring Goosebumps in the people who
aspire/desire or even envy from the very name of it.
